Finding Frida

When she was alive, Frida Kahlo was often referred to as Diego Rivera’s wife. Then, almost 30 years after her death she gained recognition for her haunting and evocative self portraits, her tempestuous and passionate relationships and her iconic fashion sense.
Frida’s Fashion Sense.
In her early years Frida favored menswear and even painted a portrait of herself in a suit. In her later years she embraced her Mexican roots by wearing traditional blouses and skirts with brightly colored shawls and handmade jewelry. She often slicked her hair back or wore it in traditional braided styles embellished with bright tropical flowers. You can capture some of Frida’s style by adding a few key pieces to your wardrobe.
Colorful Shawls and Wraps.
Many of Frida’s self portraits show her wearing a colorful shawl over a white or floral print blouse. The shawl is a common element in traditional Mexican dress and ads a splash of color to any outfit.
Floral Print Blouses.
You can pair a floral print blouse with a long full skirt or a pair of menswear tailored pants. The blouse ads a hint of softness and femininity to offset the sharp, tailored lines of the pants.
Handmade Jewelry.
Hammered metal earrings, brightly colored bracelets and religious icons are all prevalent in Frida Kahlo’s portraits.
The best way to capture the spirit of Frida Kahlo is to find and express your inner self. Frida Kahlo was a fashion icon because she was unabashedly herself. Find your inner Frida by finding your inner you.
