Sewing a Button: DIY Guide

sewing_buttons.jpg

“Oops!” You watch your button pop off your shirt. Sure, that button’s been loose for a while, but what can you do now?

Well, you are completely capable of handling this, DIY style. You can sew your button back on, and here’s how:

You’ll need: about 2 feet, or 24 inches, of thread; a needle; the rogue button or a new one; a thimble just in case; and scissors.

1. Thread needle and grab each individual end, bring them together and make a double knot. Making sure the thread is the same color as the cloth.

2. Place button at the desired location, making sure that it’s right-side in and aligned properly with the buttonhole. If this becomes challenging, use a pin, pushing it through one of the holes in the buttons and into the fabric to anchor the button until you can secure it with thread.

3. Using your button as a guide, run the needle through the cloth’s underside and up through one of the holes in the button until the knot lays flat against fabric on the opposite side of the button.

4. Press the needle through one of the adjacent button holes, down towards the knotted side and gently pull until taut.

5. Repeat steps 4 & 5 until each button hole is secured by a few thread strands. End at the knotted underside of the fabric.

6. Knot the thread, making sure there’s no slack between the fabric and knot, and then cut.

7. If you have a button with four or more holes, cross the thread in an “X” pattern on the underside of the fabric.

Just follow these easy do-it-yourself steps and you will be able to solve any fashion emergency that comes up.
