Skin Profile: Oily Skin

Oily skin is one of the most problematic skin types. Oily skin comes from excessive production of sebum, or oil, in the sebaceous glands. Sebum is meant to hydrate the skin, but an excess amount can mix with dead skin cells and dirt and block the pores. Blocked pores create acne.

It’s easy to understand why oily-skinned women want to balance out their skin. However, it’s easier said than done. Some skin care products on the market only make skin problems worse by irritating the skin or excessively drying it out.

How can you care for your oily skin appropriately and clear your blemishes for good? It depends on the consistent use of the proper skin care products. First, use a facial cleanser specially formulated to control oil. Avoid cleansers formulated with lipids or soap as gel-based cleansers work better to control oil.

Next, wipe away oil and treat blemishes with an astringent or toner that contain ingredients like salicylic acid. This will balance the skin and work to treat any existing blemishes. After that, apply a spot treatment containing salicylic acid to continue fighting your blemishes.

Finally, use a light moisturizer to hydrate the skin. You may think you don’t need moisturizer if you have oily skin. However, over drying the skin only stimulates sebum production, so your skin could potentially produce more oil. Like with facial cleanser, look for a moisturizer that doesn’t have lipids or thick creams in their ingredients. This will only block the pores.

Your cosmetics can also help control your oily skin. Look for matte foundations and non-comedogenic products that won’t clog your pores. Some cosmetic brands have product lines made specifically for oily skin. Also, carrying oil-blotting papers in your purse is a great way to get rid of excess oil during your day
